GRP service and escape routes

Service and escape routes in railway environments must be reliable and safe to use at all times – regardless of weather conditions, contamination, or operating status. GRP service routes meet these requirements permanently: they are non-slip, electrically insulating, and highly visible.

The CTS VARIOplus system has EBA type approval and is therefore approved for use in railway engineering systems. VARIOplus service and escape routes are not only used in workshops and operating facilities, but also in station areas and at level crossings, where safe and clearly marked escape routes are required.

GRP railroad crossings in winter

GRP railroad crossings – safe in all weather conditions

In fall and winter in particular, the risk of accidents on paths, stairs, and crossings increases significantly due to leaves, wet conditions, snow, or ice. GRP gratings with high slip resistance (R13) offer a clear safety advantage here.

The open-structured and sanded surface ensures a secure grip and effective water drainage. Even in adverse weather conditions, crossings remain reliably accessible. For operators, this means reduced risk of accidents, minimal maintenance, and permanently safe traffic areas.

GRP gratings are also durable, low-maintenance, grounding-free, and resistant to extreme environmental conditions – an economical solution for permanently used railroad crossings.

Color and surface as safety factors

In the railway environment, color and surface structure have a significant impact on safety. They determine visibility, orientation, and safe passage.

In addition to the standard gray version, GRP service and escape routes are also available in signal colors such as yellow or red. These increase the visibility of paths, crossings, and danger areas—especially in poor lighting conditions or high-traffic areas—and support quick and safe orientation.

Equally important is the choice of the right grating type: Service paths are usually designed with standard 30 × 30 mm meshes—economical and suitable for regular operational traffic. Escape routes require a higher level of safety and are therefore constructed with close-meshed gratings (8 × 8 mm, Nano type) or closed surfaces to minimize the risk of tripping and ensure safe passage.
